U.S. Rep. Barry Moore was the lone member Alabama GOP congressional delegation to vote against the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
The NDAA passed the Senate by a 87-13 vote Wednesday night, and then made it through the House Thursday by a 310-118 vote. Moore (R-Enterprise) was joined by 72 fellow Republicans and 45 Democrats in opposing the measure.
“This version of the NDAA forces American taxpayers to fund abortion travel, sex reassignment surgeries, a one-year reauthorization of FISA with no reforms, which allows weaponized government to spy on Americans, and critical race theory initiatives teaching that our nation’s enemies are not abroad, but within our own citizens and military,” Moore said in a press release.
I am disappointed that divisive policies which hold service members and taxpayers hostage to the Democrats' radical agenda have been included in the National Defense Authorization Act, and I cannot support it.

The $886 billion bill raises the defense budget by 3% from the previous year and extends Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
“Earlier this year, I proudly supported the House version of this legislation, which was truly focused on military readiness and service member needs,” Moore continued. “I am disappointed that divisive policies which hold service members and taxpayers hostage to the Democrats’ radical agenda have been included in this bill, and I cannot support it.”
According to Moore’s press release, the bill included:
U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile), who is in a primary race against Moore for the GOP nomination for the newly redrawn District 1, didn’t see it the same way as his opponent.
Today, I voted to:
Increase pay for our military by 5.2%
Ban CRT in the military
Authorize $316.6 million in construction funds for military bases in AL
Fully fund our National Guardsmen in support of border patrol activities

Despite complaints by Moore and some other Republicans, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks), who chairs the House Armed Service Committee, argued it was a good compromise.
“Our nation faces unprecedented threats – the National Defense Authorization Act has never been more vital,” Rogers said in a statement. “With today’s passage of the FY24 NDAA, Congress has sent a strong message to our adversaries. The FY24 NDAA provides our military with the vital authorities, resources, and capabilities that our warfighters need to stay ahead of our adversaries. The FY24 NDAA supports our servicemembers, guts Biden’s woke agenda, deters China, and strengthens our military. I urge President Biden to quickly sign this bill into law.”

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, who also sits on the House Armed Services Committee, praised the bill’s passage for bringing wins for the Yellowhammer State.
“The NDAA provides authorization for funding of every aspect of the United States military. This year’s NDAA ensures that U.S. military readiness remains at the highest level, combats aggression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), guts the Biden Administration’s woke policies & DEI bureaucracy, and increases oversight of U.S. taxpayer dollars to minimize waste,” Strong said in a press release. “The bill also makes significant investments in North Alabama and is yet another example of the importance of the region to U.S. national security. I will continue to fight for the people of Alabama’s Fifth District and ensure that everyone knows our nation is made safer by North Alabama.”
The House passed the FY24 NDAA to ensure military readiness, protect against adversarial aggression, bolster American dominance, and end the DEI bureaucracy in the military. Read my statement below. https://t.co/ZRp6Cw52TF
