Hurricane Melissa, one of the strongest hurricanes in history, made landfall in Jamaica yesterday with winds at 185 miles per hour, putting it firmly in Category 5. The storm is responsible for at least seven deaths as of Wednesday morning.
Ahead of landfall, the National Hurricane Center issued a blunt warning for 2.8 million Jamaicans on Tuesday: “THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION! TAKE COVER NOW!”
